Achieving Zero Liquid Discharge in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
Background
Headquartered in Chandigarh, our client is a global leader in the manufacturing of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), intermediates, and formulations. The client faced significant challenges in managing wastewater generated from their API manufacturing processes. Key issues included:
Various Effluents from Multiple Sources: Effluent from RO reject, cooling blowdowns, solvent washing, and softening reject required a comprehensive solution.
Effluent Impurities: High Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) levels and other mixed salts such as NaCl and CaSO₄.
Compliance Difficulties: Conventional treatment methods struggled to meet regulatory requirements.
Solution
To address these challenges, we implemented an advanced MVR-based evaporation plant on a BOOT (Build Own Operate Transfer) basis. The solution includes:
Heat Exchanger Technology: Utilizing a combination of plate-type falling film technology and tubular forced circulation evaporators for energy-efficient evaporation.
Minimal Steam Requirement: The MVR-based evaporators ensure minimal steam usage during the evaporation stages.
Final Solid Drying: Converting solids to powder form using advanced drying systems.
Our solution recovers more than 95% of the input water, which is reused within the process at low operational costs.
