Background

Our client, one of India’s leading sugar producers, operates four distilleries with a combined ethanol production capacity of 560 KLD. Most of this ethanol is blended with petrol for supply to oil companies. However, the condensate generated from burning raw spent wash contains high levels of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), and Volatile Acids (VA). The client sought a solution to recycle treated water for both process use and as makeup water for cooling towers at its unit in Uttar Pradesh.

Solution

To achieve effective water recycling, we implemented a Condensate Polishing Unit (CPU) featuring a comprehensive treatment process. This includes anaerobic treatment, aerobic treatment, tertiary treatment, ultraviolet (UV) disinfection, ultrafiltration, and reverse osmosis (RO).

  • Design Features: The CPU is designed to handle multi-feed substrates.
  • Capacity: The UV system treats 1,600 m³/day post-biological treatment, while the RO system processes 2,600 m³/day.
  • Efficiency: The solution recovers over 90% of the treated water and boasts low capital and operational expenditures.

This integrated approach not only enhances water recycling within the distillery processes but also significantly contributes to the client's sustainability goals.
