Background

Our client, a highly regarded organization in the UAE, embarked on an ambitious greenfield project in Abu Dhabi, aiming to produce 650 tonnes of duplex board paper daily. This initiative required the establishment of a comprehensive Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) that was both robust and compliant with stringent local regulatory standards. A significant challenge encountered during this project was the high calcium content present in the effluent, which posed a risk to the effectiveness of the biological treatment processes.

Solution

To address these challenges, CleanEdge Resources developed an advanced, multi-stage treatment solution tailored to meet the project’s specific needs:

  1. Primary Treatment: The initial phase included screening, equalization, settling of total suspended solids (TSS) in a  clarifier,  and temperature correction to prepare the effluent for further treatment.
  2. Anaerobic Treatment: The implementation of the LESAR Bio Digester (Lars Enviro Stirred Anaerobic Reactor) provided  effective anaerobic digestion, significantly reducing the organic load.
  3. Aerobic Treatment: Following the anaerobic phase, a two-stage aerobic treatment process was employed to further  refine  the effluent quality.
  4. Sludge Handling: To ensure proper management of residual sludge, a belt press was incorporated into the system,  facilitating efficient removal and disposal.

To specifically address the issue of calcium deposition in the effluent, a modified buffer tank equipped with a calcium removal system was integrated. This modification ensured that the biological treatment efficiency was not compromised. Furthermore, the introduction of floatable mixers in the equalization tank enhanced overall treatment performance.

The biogas produced from the LESAR Bio Digester is utilized as fuel for the boiler, leading to significant cost savings for our client. This comprehensive approach not only addressed regulatory compliance but also optimized operational efficiency, positioning the project as a benchmark for sustainable practices in the industry.
